IMDB’s rather generic introduction to the first Fast and Furious movie belies its grand scale and undeniably imaginative action set-pieces. Unlike the film itself and the subsequent entries in the series, it is concise and to the point! Throughout the series, Brian O’Connor and Dominic Toretto work together to rescue cars, friends, family and, in many cases, the world itself. Of course, they had to make some money too to keep up with their extravagant taste in automobiles so they could be accused of venturing beyond legal lines every now and then! Through the deafening explosions and car stunts, it is easy to skip an aspect that lies at the core of these movies. As the franchise has extended, so has the character list. Each newcomer brings with them either a necessary and unique skillset as well as a different perspective on tackling challenges. It could be devising a glorified lock-picking method or simply figuring out the fastest way to get from point A to point B. Collaboration lies at the heart of these movies and is something that we can learn from them. With technology and weaponry as the catalyst, the team carries out the most dangerous of missions, all the while trying to ensure that each member makes it out alive. If collaboration can be so effective in such a high stakes environment, then surely there is something that it can provide in other areas as well?

While modern technologies have enabled advanced levels of external communication, many organisations still struggle to effectively carry out internal collaboration. Sending messages to people across your building isn’t really collaboration, it’s just another form of communication. True collaboration should allow people to work together seamlessly from wherever they are. It’s more about complete synchronisation and smooth transfer of workflow between various devices – having to face no obstacle in shifting from a desktop to mobile for example. This form of collaboration does seem more employee centric, or more ‘selfish’. But on a closer look, increased flexibility, productivity, and pace of innovation come forth as the obvious results of such collaboration. And this is the reason why today’s HR departments need collaboration tools more than ever before. They enable People Teams to be quicker, deal with increasingly diverse work environments, and utilise the tools at their disposal not just for recruitment, but retention and engagement as well. Here are the various aspects where meaningful collaboration practices can yield rich dividends:

Remote Working

Distance from the workplace is no longer an obstacle to productivity. Today more and more companies are hiring remote employees. It is critical that the HR department offers a collaborative environment for all employees and candidates, taking care to ensure that no type of employee feels discriminated against. From day one it should be easy to speak to recruiters, hiring managers, and those influencing the hiring decision. Many workers today have been using a smartphone all their lives and expect the same to be utilised at the workplace as well. In fact, according to various surveys many employees would rather communicate electronically than face to face or via voice calls. By providing this early proof of a collaborative workplace, HR can increase employee faith in the company’s adoption of technology. Moreover, using technology can also help those in charge of hiring make better decisions.

Internal Social Networking

Talent that your company needs can often be found within existing social networks. However, the move from interest to something tangible often takes too long to be carried out. So how can HR teams be instantaneous in action? This process is not about social media—the channel by which information is often spread—but really about experience within the social network. It’s the ability to grab an interested candidate’s attention and rapidly communicate with other decision makers in order to move things forward faster than the competition can. Collaborative Hiring helps solve that problem. Tied together with a transparent communication mechanism and quick turnaround times, candidates are sure to be delighted by the time they are ready to join. After all, Dom and Co. have added new members to their gang from one movie to the next mostly through references and acquaintances and by lapping them up quickly before anyone else can.

Collaborating to pull off a successful jump mid-air from one car to another is not very different from collaborating to hire good talent. Ok that might be slightly untrue.

Retaining Employees

Companies are always on the lookout for the best talent and as such it is essential to do everything to retain them. Preserving the best talent in your company is a top priority. Collaboration tools aid retention, because they help create content workers by offering flexibility and inspiring innovation in the workplace. Having a company-wide tool that operates on any device with internet access and encourages communication, teamwork, and innovation can help create a collaborative culture within the company. And this is what can make the difference between retaining a great employee or watching them get poached by the competition. Public recognition for achievements, enabling communication on informal topics, rewarding innovative thinkers are just some of the ways this can be achieved. There’s a reason Dom’s family only grows in size, movie after movie. Members either retire or stay with the team, or in unfortunate cases meet an untimely death, but that comes with the JD of an unlicensed, borderline-illegal, supercar-driving mercenary!

If you’re wondering what tool can help deliver some of the use-cases above, well, we’re not quite sure.
